The typical size will be 8 - 14 people with a few non-golfers included. If desired we can complete a foursome by inviting a local club member to join in. This decision is up to the group, but it can be helpful and fun to have a local’s insights on the course.
What do the guides do?
The bilingual guides are there to offer as little or much assistance as you want. We will get you to and from the golf course, assist in the clubhouse, get the flights started, and congratulate you as you come off the 18th hole. We are also available in the hotels to assist check-in, translate menus, and keep you informed of the daily program.
What will the weather be like?
You can expect the mornings to be cool, often requiring a jacket. Afternoons are often ideal requiring only a short sleeve shirt. Of course rain is always a possibility and we recommend bringing a rain jacket and golf umbrella. In general you should plan on dressing in layers as the weather can sometimes be very unpredictable. We will attempt to get in our 18 holes but the van is there if you prefer to ride back to the hotel.
Are golf carts available?
Most Austrians believe the game is meant to be played while walking, and they use a pull cart. However, electric carts are becoming more popular and most courses, if not all, will have them available if you don’t want to use a pull cart.
Will the course distances be given in yards or meters?
In Europe, as in most other places in the world, the course distances (i.e. tee to green) will be given in meters. As a general rule 100 meters is approximately 110 yards, and you can estimate your distance in this manner.
Do I need to have a club membership card and an established handicap to play golf in Europe?
For Europeans, the answer in yes. A club membership card and handicap are necessary to get access to the golf course. For foreign players the rules are not so strict. If you have a USGA club membership card this will suffice. If you are not a member of a club you will need to get a letter from a local professional on his/her letterhead indicating that you can play to a certain handicap and are familiar with the rules and etiquette of the game of golf. Eric Peterson in the US office can help you with the format if you have questions.
To attempt to play these courses as an absolute beginner would not be appropriate. We could however arrange for golf lessons if someone came at the non-golfer rate. We will inform you before the tour of the hourly golf professional teaching rate.
Can I rent golf clubs?
Each course has a limited number of club sets for rent, but this is not an option we would recommend. To play with unfamiliar clubs, especially rental clubs, can be frustrating. If you are concerned about not being able to pack enough clothes in one suitcase and a carry-on, consider putting a flexible travel bag in the bottom of your checked bag and filling the sides of your golf carrying case with clothes. When you get to the first hotel you can move the clothes from the golf carrying case into the flexible bag and then have two travel bags.
What activities are available for the non-golfer?
We have wonderful activities for the non-golfer and non golfing days. We offer tours of Salzburg, trips to castles and famous gardens, stops at museums, walks in mountain scenerey, and opportunities to shop.
What type of dress is required on the golf courses and in the hotel?
As is usually the custom with golf courses in the USA, denim and t-shirts are not permitted. Short pants are not a problem.
In the hotels we suggest men wear slacks and golf or sport shirts for dinner; women can wear casual skirts or slacks. Avoid t-shirts and ties!
